A big autumn gale, but nothing more
Sunday night saw gales lash the Sussex coast with rain pouring down. The winds gusted up to 99 mph off the Needles on the Isle of Wight and were very strong in the hours before daybreak. However this was no super storm and nothing nearly as strong as the Great Storm of October 1987.
