{"id":9425,"date":"2015-06-24T17:09:13","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T17:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=9425"},"modified":"2015-07-08T14:37:45","modified_gmt":"2015-07-08T14:37:45","slug":"brighton-wheel-to-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/news\/local-news-brighton\/2015\/06\/brighton-wheel-to-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Brighton Wheel To Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By William Mills<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Wheel will go \u2013 lease will not be renewed<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Brighton &amp; Hove City Council has made clear the Brighton Wheel will not have its lease renewed and will have to cease trading ahead of the i360 opening, as originally agreed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an entirely separate decision from that of the planning committee, which this afternoon refused a planning application for the Wheel to stay for another five years.\u00a0 Councillors objected largely because of the Wheel\u2019s impact on nearby historic buildings and homes.<\/p>\n<p>The decision not to renew the lease for the council-owned site means the authority is sticking to its original intention when granting the Wheel a temporary stay five years ago &#8211; \u00a0to prevent two competing viewing attractions existing side-by-side on the seafront.<\/p>\n<p>As things stand it would mean the Wheel would need to be dismantled by the time its current planning consent expires at the end of May 2016.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2726\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Feb-weather-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2726\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Feb-weather-6.jpg\" alt=\"New big wheel on Brighton seafront\" width=\"570\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Feb-weather-6.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Feb-weather-6-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brighton Wheel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>An email to the Wheel from council assistant chief executive Paula Murray reads:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFurther to the meetings held last year and our subsequent correspondence regarding your desire to extend the lease for the Brighton Wheel, I thought that it was appropriate to re-iterate the position of the council as Landlord of the Dalton\u2019s Bastion site, particularly as you have a Planning Application to extend the planning permission for the Wheel on that site pending.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe council as Landlord has not changed its view from that expressed to you last year in that the council does not intend to give permission for the Wheel and the i360 to be operational at the same time. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This is explained in more detail in the attached response that the council made to the Local Planning Authority in respect of the Planning Application you have submitted.
