{"id":5937,"date":"2014-05-27T10:13:34","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T10:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=5937"},"modified":"2014-06-05T11:30:32","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T11:30:32","slug":"new-nhs-abortion-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/news\/2014\/05\/new-nhs-abortion-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"New NHS Abortion Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">On May 23 The Department of Health published the following;<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">The new\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e8aca;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/guidance-for-doctors-on-compliance-with-the-abortion-act\">guidance for healthcare professionals on compliance with the Abortion Act<\/a>\u00a0clarifies:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">\n<li>that abortion on the grounds of gender alone is not lawful<\/li>\n<li>the expectation that 2 doctors, when certifying that an abortion meets the criteria set out in the Act, must consider the individual circumstances of the woman and be prepared to justify their decision<\/li>\n<li>that it is good practice for at least one of the doctors to have seen the pregnant woman before reaching a decision about the termination<\/li>\n<li>that pre-signing of statutory abortion certificates prior to consideration of a woman\u2019s circumstances is not compliant with the Act<\/li>\n<li>that doctors have a legal duty to report all abortions to the Chief Medical Officer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">Following a consultation carried out earlier this year,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e8aca;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/update-to-procedures-for-the-approval-of-independent-sector-places-published\">procedures that independent sector abortion clinics<\/a>\u00a0must follow in order to be approved to provide services have also been updated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">In order to be approved independent abortion clinics must fully comply with the updated guidance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">Independent sector places will have until 23 June to reapply for approval to continue practicing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #0b0c0c;\">Updated\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e8aca;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/analysis-of-male-to-female-birth-ratios-in-the-uk-2008-to-2012\">annual birth ratio statistics for England and Wales<\/a>\u00a0have also been published. This data takes into account all births between 2008 and 2012 and is broken down by the mother\u2019s country of birth.
