{"id":5267,"date":"2014-04-02T11:42:33","date_gmt":"2014-04-02T11:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=5267"},"modified":"2014-04-08T10:06:32","modified_gmt":"2014-04-08T10:06:32","slug":"eternal-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/show-reviews-brighton\/2014\/04\/eternal-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Eternal Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By William Mills<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The English Touring Theatre&#8217;s<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h3><strong>Eternal Love by Howard Brenton<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>The story of Abelard &amp; Heloise<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Showing at Brighton&#8217;s Theatre Royal Tues 1 April to Sat 5 April 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5271\" alt=\"_DSC4909\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC4909-570x380.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC4909-570x380.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC4909-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Set in the first half of the twelfth century France, <strong>Eternal Love<\/strong> is a stage play of religious fervour and scandalous love.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Abelard&#8217;s modernist views on religion outrage traditionalist monk Bernard of Clairvaux leading to a life long clash of wills and set against a backdrop of forbidden love, for if Abelard is to become Pope in heady far off days he can&#8217;t marry his sweetheart.<\/p>\n<p>Heloise is the teenage niece of Abelard&#8217;s patron, churchman Fulbert. Originally entrusted to teach, he seduces her instead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I seduced him!&#8221; She claims coming to his defence.<\/p>\n<p>As the years pass, alas all is not well, Abelard is attacked and retires to a monastery leaving a distraught Heloise to live out her days in a nunnery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5269\" alt=\"_DSC5245\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC5245-570x380.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC5245-570x380.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC5245-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This two part play, directed by <strong>John Dove<\/strong>, has an unusual start with members of the cast circulating amongst the audience who are distracted from the opening song which otherwise would have set the scene perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Sturzaker<\/strong> plays Abelard alongside <strong>Jo Herbert <\/strong>who as Heloise brings the play alive with laughter and love. <strong>Sam Crane<\/strong> is a very able Bernard of Clairvaux.<\/p>\n<p>In the second part at the dramatic showdown at Sens, <strong>Julius D&#8217;Silva<\/strong> as King Louis VI gives a fabulous performance and some much needed laughter. Heloise&#8217;s uncle cannon Fulbert was well played by <strong>Edward Peel<\/strong> as was Fulbert&#8217;s cousin by <strong>Tim Frances<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5270\" alt=\"_DSC5396 (570x380)\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC5396-570x380.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC5396-570x380.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC5396-570x380-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brighton&#8217;s Theatre Royal is an excellent venue for a memorising play of this calibre as its stage is just right \u00a0to give the cast plenty of space and a specially constructed raised area for the musicians \u00a0to play period melodies with lute, flute and recorder. Composer <strong>William Lyons<\/strong> sought to reflect the unfolding action by making the music become part of it.<\/p>\n<p>The final scene of the communal dance is truly inspiring as it depicts Abelard declaring his love &#8216;now and forever&#8217; for Heloise, giving the audience a realistic glimpse of the medieval world of the Troubadours and Trouveres&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>An excellent evening.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<div style=\"position: absolute; overflow: hidden; width: 2px; height: 1px; left: -288; top: -277; z-index: 177;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/neworleanpets.1landing-page.xyz\">info<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Theatre Royal Brighton<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[101],"tags":[836,838,835,844,837,840,839,771,841,843],"class_list":["post-5267","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-show-reviews-brighton","tag-aberlard-heloise","tag-david-sturzaker","tag-eternal-love","tag-howard-brenton","tag-jo-herbert","tag-julius-dsilva","tag-sam-crane","tag-theatre-royal-brighton","tag-tim-frances","tag-william-lyons"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
