{"id":5151,"date":"2014-03-04T10:38:54","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T10:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=5151"},"modified":"2014-03-18T20:36:36","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T20:36:36","slug":"noel-cowards-fallen-angels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/show-reviews-brighton\/2014\/03\/noel-cowards-fallen-angels\/","title":{"rendered":"Noel Coward&#8217;s Fallen Angels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By William Mills<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fallen Angels opened in Brighton&#8217;s Theatre Royal on Monday 3 March and runs until Saturday 8 March 2014.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5157\" alt=\"Fallen Angels - credit Darren Bell (9)\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-9-570x407.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-9-570x407.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-9-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Jenny Seagrove and Sara Crowe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A cast of six starring <strong>Jenny Seagrove<\/strong> (A Woman of Substance) and <strong>Sara Crowe<\/strong> (Four Weddings and a Funeral).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jenny Seagrove<\/strong> clearly demonstrates she is at the height of the acting career with a brilliant performance and is supported superbly by <strong>Sara Crowe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is set in the <strong>London<\/strong> drawing room home of bored couple Julia and Fred Sterroll, (played by Ms Seagrove and <strong>Tim Wallers<\/strong>) who debate the virtues of marriage in its second decade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5158\" alt=\"Fallen Angels - credit Darren Bell (10) (2)\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-10-2-570x482.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-10-2-570x482.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-10-2-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Their live in &#8216;help,&#8217; <strong>Saunders<\/strong>, (played by <strong>Gillian McCafferty<\/strong>), is a mine of information.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Gillian McCafferty<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The scene moves to dinner with Julia and friend Jane Banbury (played by <strong>Sara Crowe<\/strong>) providing an absolutely riveting performance as two women in 1920&#8217;s evening wear getting drunk and quarrelling over an old flame who they both met in <strong>Italy<\/strong> before they were married.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5156\" alt=\"Fallen Angels - credit Darren Bell (4)\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-4-570x336.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-4-570x336.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-4-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sense of period is beautifully captured with servant Saunders trying not to look down her nose at their antics and maintain some decorum.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Robin Sebastian, Tim Wallers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The following morning their husbands reappear, Jane Banbury&#8217;s &#8216;Willy,&#8217; (played by Robin Sebastian) \u00a0and Fred are most put out by their wives&#8217; infidelity and become red faced with indignation. But just as their wives have managed to smooth ruffled feathers who should arrive?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Philip Battley<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The final cast member Maurice Duclos (played by <strong>Philip Battley<\/strong>) makes a grand entrance!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5154\" alt=\"Fallen Angels - credit Darren Bell (7)\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-7-570x342.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-7-570x342.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallen-Angels-credit-Darren-Bell-7-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Writer Noel Coward 1899-1973 was one of England&#8217;s 20th century great playwrights. He had a string of successful hits in the 1920&#8217;s which included Fallen Angels opening in 1925. After WWII he moved with the times becoming a cabaret and TV star in America. Later in his career as an actor, he appeared in <em>Our Man In Havana (1959)\u00a0<\/em>and &#8216;Mr Big&#8217; with Michael Caine in\u00a0<em>The Italian Job (1968).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The play lasts one hour and 50 mins. It was just the right length to keep the audience rocking with laughter and excited as to what twist is coming next.<\/p>\n<p>The Theatre Royal&#8217;s stage was perfect for the scene of tranquil gentility in the Englishman&#8217;s home. The drawing room featured a marble \u00a0column and ancient portico above the doorway, rather like the modern day Egyptian Hall in the City of London&#8217;s Mansion House.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5159\" alt=\"Fallen Angels -
