A WWII<br \/>\nLancaster bomber&#8217;s cruising speed was around <strong>180 <\/strong>mph.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Jap&#8217;s<\/strong> train track is buried in\u00a0landscape cuttings for 80% of its length muffling the noise and minimising the visual\u00a0impact.<\/p>\n<p>However Britain&#8217;s <strong>HS2<\/strong> is still in the consultative stage, and if it goes ahead the first trains will run<br \/>\nsometime after <strong>2025<\/strong>. One former UK Transport minister ruefully commented;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will be 50 years out of date before it even starts and will be no cheaper than the <strong>Japanese<\/strong><br \/>\nsystem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>France&#8217;s<\/strong> latest trains have the edge on Britain&#8217;s Victorian railway network too.<\/p>\n<p>The new double decker <strong>TGV<\/strong> cuts the train journey time from <strong>Paris<\/strong> to <strong>Barcelona<\/strong> to six and a half hours, and\u00a0from London it is now only a nine hour trip.<br \/>\nIn contrast to fly, this week, it took a weary traveller from <strong>Brighton<\/strong> 18 hours to reach<br \/>\n<strong>Madrid,<\/strong> with so much time being taken up waiting around at airports.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Victorian<\/strong> times <strong>Britain&#8217;s<\/strong> innovative engineering skills were the envy of the world.
