{"id":4749,"date":"2013-11-01T09:59:04","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T09:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=4749"},"modified":"2014-02-03T09:57:19","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T09:57:19","slug":"council-restricts-new-off-license-to-8-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/uncategorized\/2013\/11\/council-restricts-new-off-license-to-8-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Restricts New Off-License To 8 PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0By William Mills<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong>Brighton &amp; Hove\u2019s<\/strong> Licensing Panel on Monday, 28 October approved a new alcohol licence for the <strong>Co-Op<\/strong> store in <strong>Portland Road<\/strong>, Hove from 8am to 8pm daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">The <strong>Co-Op<\/strong> applied to sell alcohol from 8am to 11pm every day, but were 8pm after taking into hearing from of Director of Public Health <strong>Tom Scanlon<\/strong> who spoke about the need to combat pre-loading and binge drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-613\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-613\" alt=\"photo of man lying on doorstep sodden with drink\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/drunk-on-doorstep.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drink<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong>Dr Scanlon<\/strong> highlighted that there is considerable proxy purchasing from off-licences for underage drinkers, despite the best efforts of responsible retailers. He also noted that the location was close to supported accommodation for young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">He also asked the Co-Op to sign up to the city\u2019s \u2018Sensible on Strength\u2019 campaign by agreeing not to sell super-strength alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">The Southern Co-Operative Limited has agreed not to sell super-strength alcohol at two other stores ( Sussex University and Western Road, Brighton) of more than 6%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong>Councillor Stephanie Powell,<\/strong> who chaired the Panel said;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\">&#8220;We were concerned that alcohol sales could adversely affect crime and disorder and the protection of children, and that this store is close to accommodation for vulnerable young people.
