If any leaf damage is seen, we need to check each one carefully to find and dispose of the culprit.<\/p>\n<p>One suggested method to keep plants healthy over winter is to wash their leaves with a deluge of water. To prevent soil from being washed out of the pot use kitchen aluminium foil to completely enclose the base, then it\u2019s safe to place the plant in the bath and shower with tepid water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2413\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Greenfingers-8-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2413\" title=\"Greenfingers 8 1\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Greenfingers-8-1-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Greenfingers-8-1-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Greenfingers-8-1.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornapple leaf with fungal growth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>Thornapple<\/strong> in the next photo has fungus disfiguring its leaf. Any affected need to be snipped off and the plant sprayed several times a few days apart with a propriety anti fungus spray. Although a small snail can be seen near the spiky seed pod there is no sign of the tell tale holes because this type of plant has its own defensive system. The plant contains both a powerful narcotic and poison within its leaves. A pest eats just enough leaf to get a taste of the narcotic then falls off dead as a result of the poison also ingested.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2414\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Greenfingers-8-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2414\" title=\"Greenfingers 8 2\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Greenfingers-8-2.jpg\" alt=\"Jasmine with pot protected by bubble wrap\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jasmine pot frost protected with bubble wrap<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The third photograph is of a <strong>Jasmine<\/strong>, its pot encased in bubble wrap. As its shoots are entwined in a trellis it\u2019s not possible to bring indoors. Frost kills a plant by harming its roots, so these must be protected if it is being left outside over winter.<\/p>\n<p>Plants brought indoors need their moisture level carefully monitoring which can be done with an inexpensive probe. If the roots are allowed to stay waterlogged they will rot causing the plant to die. Don\u2019t water the base unless it\u2019s really dry and the plant\u2019s weight feels lighter, but do regularly mist them, once or twice daily is ideal.
