Today these herbs are visually stunning when in flower and it\u2019s fun to research their association with folklore. However they are poisonous so it really is the case of look but don\u2019t touch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Monkshood<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Aconitum\u00a0 Napellus <\/em>also known as\u00a0wolfsbane\u00a0is a highly poisonous but beautiful plant growing up to five foot high. It has petiolate, deeply divided, dark <a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monkshood.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1858\" title=\"Monkshood\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monkshood-155x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monkshood-155x300.jpg 155w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monkshood.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><\/a>green leaves and many violet-blue blossoms clustered at the top of the stalk.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Robert Graves&#8217; \u00a0 I, Claudius<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The poison is fast acting and deadly and poison arrows have been recorded as far back as Stone Age times. In ancient Rome in 54 A.D. Emperor Claudius, immortalised in Robert Graves\u2019 book\u00a0 <em>I, Claudius,<\/em> was poisoned with aconite by his wife so her son Nero can succeed to the Imperial Throne. It\u2019s last recorded use as a medicine was during the First World War by the Central Powers of Germany and Austro-Hungary as a substitute for dwindling stocks of heart tonics.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thornapple<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1861\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thornapple.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1861\" title=\"Thornapple\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thornapple-300x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thornapple-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thornapple.jpg 361w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thornapple<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A plant increasingly rare in the wild, but making a comeback as a curiosity in some garden centres. It\u2019s an annual, recognisable by its white funnel shaped flowers, and walnut like seed pods covered in prickly green spikes. Its pungent odour is believed to be stupefying, although this may apply to a field full of them rather than a solitary house plant.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0Legend<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Legend tells us that although very poisonous Thornapple was used in love potions. One writer described it as \u2018a tool of brothel keepers, depraved courtesans and shameless lechers.\u2019 The plant gained the name \u2018love-will\u2019. It was also called the \u2018sorcerer\u2019s herb\u2019 because it was rumoured to have been used by witches in their flying ointments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<strong>Houseplant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Today it is an easy growing, attractive houseplant. However due to its reputation for being poisonous it must be handled with due care.
