{"id":1788,"date":"2012-10-24T19:29:31","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T19:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=1788"},"modified":"2020-10-25T08:19:36","modified_gmt":"2020-10-25T08:19:36","slug":"political-maps-of-eastern-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/travel\/2012\/10\/political-maps-of-eastern-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Political Maps of Eastern Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By William Mills<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Let&#8217;s look at how the maps of eastern Europe changed during the 20th century, and ask is its future really a concern for the UK?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Napoleon&#8217;s Legacy\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A useful starting point of the modern era is with the end of the\u00a0Napoleonic\u00a0War in 1815.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It&#8217;s worth noting that French\u00a0Emperor\u00a0Napoleon recruited a large chunk of his\u00a0cavalry from the Polish population of Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0Map of<strong>\u00a0Russia and Germany in 1914<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">After his \u00a0empire ended in tatters, what is now modern day Poland was divided up between Germany and Russia as they were on the winning side along with Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">We can see this in the map below. Our map of 1914 shows the territorial boundaries which had lasted since 1815. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Poland was part of the Russian Empire of Czar Nicholas. The Germans&#8217; policy was to keep the Russians as far to the East as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0Great War 1914-1918, Treaty of Versailles 1919- Changing Map<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">However in 1918 the Western Allies, Britain, France and USA, defeated Germany and at the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 forced\u00a0starving\u00a0Germany to surrender territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> The French felt they had a debt to the Polish from a hundred years earlier so pressed for the creation of Poland. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Russians promptly invaded this new country but were driven back by French artillery supporting the Polish fighters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The allies also made Danzig a &#8216;free port&#8217; shared by all, which in turn was a red rag to Hitler&#8217;s newly rearmed Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Second World War<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">On 1 September 1939 Germany attacked Poland. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Britain and France declared war two days later but could do little militarily to help. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">On \u00a017 September Russia who had signed a secret treaty with Germany( called the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact) attacked \u00a0Poland from the East. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In November the Soviets, as the Russians were also called, attacked Finland which put up a spirited defence and although allied to Germany later in the war managed to retain their independence after 1945.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">By 1942 Germany had achieved its initial war aims of controlling vast amounts of Russia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">They had hoped to destroy the Russian Army and force them to agree to surrender the territory shown on the map below. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The idea was to have a buffer zone to where they could deport people they didn&#8217;t like and permanently keep from Reval(now called Tallinn) in the north to the Black Sea in the south.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">According to various historians this new empire would be treated in the same way as Germany&#8217;s former African colonies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The locals would be little better than slave\/serf labourers with ethnic Germans encouraged to settle and form a new ruling class.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<strong>Berlin April 1945<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It didn&#8217;t work out for the Germans. They couldn&#8217;t stop the Russian tanks which reached Berlin in April 1945 ending the war in the West. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Russians had succeeded in pushing their boundary all the way to the line between the Baltic and the Adriatic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">All to the east of this line were called Soviet\u00a0satellites and Russia ruled the poor Baltic states like colonies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Everything of value was stolen or destroyed and Russians arrived to set up shop as the new rulers\u00a0helping themselves to the best of everything thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Federal Republic of West Germany\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Germany was broken into two. However what was called the Federal Republic of West Germany recovered and built up its financial strength once more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Map of Communist Eastern Europe\u00a01945-1991<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Communist controlled East had a much lower standard of living than that of the West. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Russians tried to keep the truth hidden but with the advent of radio, television and more travel, their lies got less believable as time went by. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Eventually Communism collapsed into ruin and the peoples of Eastern Europe finally won their freedom from Russia and communism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Below, the dark red line to the left\u00a0of the map is the &#8216;Iron Curtain&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It runs from Stettin in the north, to the Adriatic in the south, and the phrase was first used by Churchill in his famous post war speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">All to the east of this line was controlled by the Soviets in Moscow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1793\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1793\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1945-91-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1793\" title=\"Eastern Europe 1945-91 001\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1945-91-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1945-91-001.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1945-91-001-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">picture credit cartographer Gene Leisz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>\u00a0Map of Eastern EU 1991<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">From 1991 onwards it seemed to some as if Germany had finally won their aims which they fought the two World Wars to achieve. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Domination of Europe and the Russians pushed back as far eastwards as possible. Only now it was called the EU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">By 2012 the Baltic States are part of the EU along with Poland and Romania. However for the German plan to work Belarus and Ukraine need to join the EU as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The German plan is sadly unravelling. Firstly Belarus is looking increasingly eastward and behaving like Putin&#8217;s Russian gangsters and not like a Western democracy should. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Ukraine is too big to be easily absorbed. The German plan for the\u00a0peripheral countries to provide a\u00a0\u00a0colonial type market has backfired. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The young of these countries are flooding into the West. Many EU members are crying; &#8216;Enough!
