The new<br \/>\nadaptation will be published by Nick Hern Books.<\/p>\n<h4>Great Expectations<\/h4>\n<p>is co-designed by Robin Peoples, lighting by<br \/>\nKal Fischer, original music by Simon Slater,<br \/>\nand sound by Matt McKenzie.<\/p>\n<p>Produced on tour by<br \/>\nBruce Athol Mackinnon on behalf of<br \/>\nBeckman Unicorn Ltd. &amp;<br \/>\nSatis House Productions Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Estella enters as an aloof young woman in need of companionship provided by young Pip at the expense of her guardian Miss Havisham. When she is sent abroad to further her education Pip is heartbroken.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1584\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great_Expectations006-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1584\" title=\"Great Expectations\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great_Expectations006-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Estella-Miss Havisham&#39;s ward and emotional plaything<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alas, Miss Havisham was jilted on her wedding day by a rogue. A nasty stock, but instead of getting over it she retreats into \u00a0isolation and self pity. Raising orphaned Estella as a single parent she is unable to teach her ward how to give and receive love.<br \/>\nEstella is taught how to freeze her emotions and hurt, only to be hurt in return. Beautiful but so alone.<\/p>\n<p>Young Pip has to dance with her. He is awkward, torn by self doubt and\u00a0adolescent\u00a0anguish. She appears so cool and\u00a0sophisticated, worldly and knowledgeable. Yet all along she is young and just wants to play and be liked.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Dickens provides few laughs writing about the current affairs of his time. Great Expectations was first published in 1861 in a periodical.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paula Wilcox (Hilary Potts in <em>Emmerdale<\/em>) plays Miss Havisham, a wealthy spinster cheated in love, and determined to take it out on Pip and Estella.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1582\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1582\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great_Expectations521-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1582\" title=\"Great Expectations\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great_Expectations521-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"539\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Self pitying and tragic Miss Havisham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pip&#8217;s fortunes change and he finds himself established in a fine London townhouse with the witty and entertaining Jaggers played by Jack Ellis.<\/p>\n<h4>Chris Ellison<\/h4>\n<p>However the underlying theme of the play is provided by escaped convict Magwich played brilliantly by Chris Ellison (DI Burnside in <em>the Bill<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>In the 1850&#8217;s crime and punishment was a hot topic of public debate. Before the loss of the North American colonies in 1776 prisoners were transported there as convict slave labour. After this time the prison population swelled amid growing\u00a0abhorrence\u00a0to the wide spread use of the death penalty. A few had been transported to the sugar plantations in the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0only to quickly die from malaria spread by mosquito bites. Natives from tropical West Africa were better suited to the climate and subsequently used as slaves, although this was abolished by Parliament at the behest of William Wilberforce in 1807.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of Australia provided a similar climate to England&#8217;s and a solution to overcrowded jails. Transportation started in 1788, however by the\u00a0time of writing it was ending.\u00a0New South Wales, a prospering colony both unwilling to take and\u00a0no longer needing\u00a0convict labourers, was the first to end transportation in 1840. The last convicts were shipped to Western Australia in 1868, so \u00a0society pondered once again the problem of Britain&#8217;s prison population.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1586\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1586\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great_Expectations603-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1586\" title=\"Great Expectations\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great_Expectations603-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pip and Magwich<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were two solutions suggested. Couples, represented by Pip and Estella, and his extended family Joe the blacksmith and his new wife, should bring up children with love and care so they wouldn&#8217;t become criminals in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>The alternative\u00a0was mass hangings \u00a0as portrayed in the sombre sentencing scene. <em>Some laughed but most wept.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1583\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1583\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great-Expectations-249-crop1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1583\" title=\"Great Expectations\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great-Expectations-249-crop1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The doomed convict Magwich awaits sentence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The stage was\u00a0atmospherically lit and shrouded in mist bringing the ghostly mid Victorian times back to life. The professional cast worked well together. It definitely brought the audience to the edge of their seats on more than one occasion. The two sessions with interval in between were the right length for adults.
