It was called the Great War of 1914-1918.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Submarines<\/h4>\n<p>These bad people, the Germans that is, had submarines. These long, black whale shaped, man made, metal fish patrolled the ocean causing mayhem.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Tuna<\/h4>\n<p>This mayhem appealed to Porky. He lived in the deep wide ocean with his mother and brothers and sisters. An uncle was also swimming by occasionally. Sadly Dad got mistaken for a giant tuna. He got canned.<br \/>\nThe German submarines, or U-boats, as they were known, patrolled the oceans and seaways of the world looking for prey. Rather like Porky and his family.<br \/>\nThe World War 1 U-boats used to motor rapidly along the surface. When a likely target appeared on the horizon the sub dived. It swam along under the sea and waited to pounce on its prey.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Passenger ship<\/h4>\n<p>One day Porky was swimming through the wreck of a passenger ship. One of the cabins had yet to flood. Porky looked in through the porthole, as ship windows are called.<br \/>\nHe saw a box with moving pictures across its screen. It showed an aquatic theme park somewhere in land. The dolphins were rising up on their\u00a0tail fins\u00a0and swimming backwards.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Dolphins<\/h4>\n<p>The humans clapped loudly. They threw the dolphins lots of dead fish. \u2018Gosh! That\u2019s my diet!\u2019 thought Porky.<br \/>\nRoger peered out of the aeroplane window. As any other eleven year old he was excited to be finally on the best bit of his summer holidays.<br \/>\nHis mother was taking him and his sister to Ibiza for their summer vacation. Mum\u2019s boyfriend started out with them. But there was some problem at the airport. So he hadn\u2019t been allowed to board the aircraft.\u00a0Mum had been a bit tearful when she had come back from the interview room. But she had managed to get the cash from his wallet. So their \u2018spends\u2019 were OK.<br \/>\nRoger\u2019s sister, Barbara, went to the senior school. She didn\u2019t usually talk to him. Certainly never at school. At home she always came home in a strop and slammed her bedroom door.\u00a0Mum said \u2018she was that age\u2019 and they must be patient. To Roger she had always been \u2018that age\u2019.\u00a0The under carriage went down with a definite click.\u00a0The \u2018Fasten\u00a0seat belt\u2019 sign lights came on.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Ibiza \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-crop-0081.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-714\" title=\"Ibiza crop 008\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-crop-0081-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-crop-0081-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-crop-0081.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThis is your captain speaking.\u201d Said the voice over the intercom. \u201cWe are approaching Ibiza on our final decent. We will be on the ground shortly. The temperature is 28 degrees C. The weather is warm and sunny. Thank you for flying with us.\u201d<br \/>\nRoger loved the landings. It was usually when his big sister was sick.<br \/>\nPorky lived with his family in a deep trench in the seabed near a big island. His gang would spend all day swimming deep down. His mum had told them all to stay down below the fishing nets laid out by the humans. That way they would be safe.<\/p>\n<h4>Atlantic<\/h4>\n<p>The baby sharks would need another year of growth before their mother would take through the narrow Straits of Gibraltar and out in to the big wide ocean. The humans called this \u2018The Atlantic.\u2019<br \/>\nWhen things die they usually sink. If Porky and his family don\u2019t gobble them up they float back up. This has something to do with the gases expanding.<br \/>\nPorky\u2019s mum had said time and again they must wait patiently. The food will drop and they will find it. In the depths they remain safe. They remain undiscovered.<br \/>\nAlas Porky was young. He was impatient. Worse of all he was hungry. Giving mum the slip wasn\u2019t easy. She was a lot bigger than him. She could swim much faster than him. It seemed she had eyes in the back of her head. So he just had to wait his turn. It would come.<\/p>\n<h4>Mediterranean\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-castle-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-865\" title=\"Ibiza castle crop\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-castle-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-castle-crop.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-castle-crop-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Roger stood on the tarmac at Ibiza airport. The sudden change from the air conditioned plane to the blinding heat of the parched, sun drenched Mediterranean was overwhelming.\u00a0He reached for his mother\u2019s hand and held on tightly.<br \/>\n\u201cOh cry baby!\u201d Barbara immediately said. She towered over him as she always did. Her face still looked grey around the gills.<br \/>\nMaybe he\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t\u00a0have dropped his rubber toad into the sick bag before passing it opened to the stewardess. She in turn had promptly retched up too.<br \/>\nHe had only avoided an immediate female lynching by Mum saying Barbara could watch him being spanked as soon as they got to the hotel.<br \/>\nBarbara pulled his and Mum\u2019s arms apart.<br \/>\n\u201cYou are\u00a0sissies!\u201d she screamed. \u201cIt is so un cool being seen with you.\u201d She was on the verge of tears again. A state she was never very far from at the best of times.<br \/>\n\u201cHush.\u201d Said Mum.<br \/>\nThat was about as close as Mum was going to get with standing up to her head strong first born.<br \/>\nThe upshot of the tarmac tantrums was that Mum paid for a taxi to the hotel instead of making them wait for the bus.<br \/>\nAlthough this\u00a0hadn&#8217;t\u00a0turned out to be as brilliant as they had first hoped.<br \/>\n\u201cYou speel the nama of \u2018otel?\u201d asked the driver.<br \/>\nMum tried shouting back as loudly as possible.<br \/>\n\u201cIsland not big. You should know.\u201d<br \/>\nBarbara sat looking at her feet. \u2018Dying from embarrassment seems to be a slow lingering death.\u2019 Thought Roger.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Hotel<\/h4>\n<p>Next they were on the balcony of the hotel room. The sea glistened in the distance. The swimming pool was right outside. It was fabulous!<br \/>\nMum was sniffing about how it should have been a direct sea view instead of an oblique one.<br \/>\nHis sister was just sniffing.<br \/>\n\u201cCan we go to the sea? Can we go to the sea?\u201d Roger shouted. He jumped up and down with excitement.<br \/>\n\u201cOh take him Barbara. I need to stay here and have a quiet faint for a bit.\u201d She said.<br \/>\n\u201cRight you!\u201d Barbara snarled. \u201cNow you degenerate hoody, you wait. And any peeping while I\u2019m getting changed and it\u2019s instant death.<br \/>\n\u201cIf any boys I smile at come over, you are dust. If I don\u2019t smile and they still come over, you get a pain in your foot. You will, because I will stamp on it.\u201d she explained.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat if you smile at them and they walk away?\u201d asked Roger.<br \/>\n\u201cThen it\u2019s death. Your death.\u201d With this Barbara closed the conversation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-863\" title=\"Ibiza boat 4\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat-4.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat-4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Chapter Two<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The pale blue sky combined with the bright July sunshine. It caused a million sparkles on the rippling sea.<br \/>\nThe beaches at Ibiza are particularly clean. The Spanish these days take great care of their coastline and fish stocks.<br \/>\nWhile most people fly to and from Es Corbola, the name ofIbiza\u2019s airport, some arrive by boat.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Alicante<\/h4>\n<p>The nearest Spanish mainland port is Alicante, some 90 miles away.<br \/>\nOn a boat ride from Alicante to Ibiza one passes huge fish farms. These can be bigger than one square mile. That\u2019s 640 acres and is a huge area. Regent\u2019s park in London is about 300 acres.<br \/>\nThese fish farms are about eight miles out to sea and stretch all along the coastline. The Spanish authorities are being very responsible about conserving fish stocks and marine conservation.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Isla di Tarbarca \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-861\" title=\"Ibiza boat\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat.jpg 369w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ibiza-boat-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Off Alicante there are some small islands called Isla di Tarbarca. If you are lucky enough to visit them you are in for a truly amazing experience.<br \/>\nThe area has been declared a marine nature reserve. This means when you dive in you are surrounded by fish. They are not only tame. They have attitude too.<br \/>\nComing around the headland into the bay of Tarbarca was a yacht with a big white sail. A boy was standing on the deck at the bow. His name was Pedro. He was waiting the command from his father, Manuel, to let go the anchor.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Yacht<\/h4>\n<p>The echo sounder is the electronic instrument that shows how deep it is. It was reading 5 metres to the bottom of the sea. The yacht had a draft of 2 metres, which is how far the boat\u2019s keel stretches down beneath the surface.<br \/>\nThis was about the right depth to anchor in. Too deep are there is a risk of being run down by a bigger ship. Too shallow and there is danger of smashing the bottom of the boat into a rock.<br \/>\n\u201cLet go!\u201d Came the shout from back aft.<br \/>\nPedro promptly pushed the lever which let the anchor chain pour out.<br \/>\nSoon they were safely anchored and the boarding ladder clipped into place. Pedro slipped off his shirt, grabbed his mask, and dived over the side into the wonderfully clear, translucent sea.<br \/>\nPeering through his snorkelling mask he saw a fish swim right up to him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou can\u2019t touch me!\u201d It said to a startled Pedro. \u201cI\u2019m an endangered species. But I\u2019m allowed to peck at you. Have you any food for me? Humans are supposed to bring food. We do tricks in return.\u201d<br \/>\nA little way out to sea Porky had seen the sign on the seabed.<br \/>\n\u2018Nature Reserve. Fishermen stay out.\u2019 \u00a0Porky liked watching huge shoals of fish swimming by. He liked even better the thought of munching his way through them.<br \/>\nHis Mum has impressed upon him that they only ate dead fish. Live ones weren\u2019t allowed. This however only increased his appetite further.<br \/>\n\u2018After all there is no harm in having a look.\u2019 thought Porky. He swam along the bottom following the contours and the gradual slope upwards.<br \/>\nSoon he saw the black shapes of the anchored yachts floating up on the surface. Near one of them was a strange looking creature with bubbles of air coming out of it.<br \/>\nPorky circled on the bottom for a couple of circuits before coming up behind the boy. Porky gave Pedro a little nudge in the back with his snout. Pedro turned around and stared Porky in the face.<br \/>\n\u201cHello.\u201d Said Porky. \u201cAre you tasty?\u201d<br \/>\nAt that precise moment there was a pressure wave across his antenna. His Mum was thrashing her tail around. The message read; \u201cWhere are you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSorry! Got to dash!\u201d said Porky. The boy seemed frozen in the \u2018hors d\u2019eoures\u2019 position.<br \/>\nWith a flick of his tail he was gone.<br \/>\nManuel, who had just nipped into the cabin to get a coke from the fridge, returned to the deck to see his son floating comatose just beneath the surface.<br \/>\nHe dived straight in with a shout of alarm to his wife.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Shark!<\/h4>\n<p>Esperanza shook her son.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are no sharks in this part of the Mediterranean.\u201d she insisted. \u201cThey do not come this close in shore.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShark, shark!\u201d mumbled Pedro.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat you saw was a dolphin. And dolphins are friendly.\u201d She said with a hint of exasperation in her voice.<br \/>\nHis father had soaked his clothes diving in. He was less impressed. \u201cHave you been on the glue again?\u201d He demanded.<br \/>\nPedro\u2019s parents had been summoned to school to find him light headed and all woozy. He had been behind the bicycle shed trying to impress the girls. It hadn\u2019t worked. Right now they were both over keen on the discipline thing.<br \/>\nHe decided playing dumb was the best policy.<br \/>\nHis father turned to his wife.\u00a0\u201cWe must get on to Ibiza. The charter party are arriving today.\u201d He said whilst\u00a0toweling\u00a0his hair dry. \u201cDo stop dripping all over my cockpit. Stand on the on deck.\u201d She replied.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What mystery lies ahead?
