{"id":10906,"date":"2016-02-05T11:18:12","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T11:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/?p=10906"},"modified":"2016-02-08T11:55:11","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T11:55:11","slug":"why-britain-must-leave-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/index.php\/news\/overseas-news\/2016\/02\/why-britain-must-leave-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Britain Must Leave The EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The best reason to leave the EU may have been overlooked, argues William Mills, citing that EU federalists, believing they have access to Britain&#8217;s nuclear arsenal, might goad Russia into war.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The decision which heralded the end of Britain\u2019s empire was announced in January 1943 at the height of the World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">US President Roosevelt announced at Casablanca what Germany\u2019s surrender terms would be to end the war in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Speaking years later a Labour member of the war cabinet explained that he assumed Churchill would have agreed the details in advance with the Americans and the decision was taken by a committee of which he was not part of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Labour MP said he nearly fell of his seat when Churchill, speaking after the war, told the House of Commons he didn\u2019t know in advance either and wasn\u2019t consulted as to what terms to impose on Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cyprus-570.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2840\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2840\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cyprus-570.jpg\" alt=\"Euro symbol with Cyprus flag sinking in the water\" width=\"570\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cyprus-570.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cyprus-570-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">From that date Britain no longer had control of its foreign policy as a sovereign state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This was painfully brought home in 1956 at the time of the Suez Crisis. Britain, France and Israel invaded Egypt after President Nasser seized the Suez Canal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Russia threatened nuclear war and America, furious at not having been consulted in advance, refused to back her allies up. Eden\u2019s government fell amid a humiliating British climb down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The next world event to shape Britain and Europe\u2019s foreign policy was the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The USA had placed long range missiles in northern Turkey which had the capacity to reach deep into the Soviet Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Their response was to prepare launch sites in Cuba which would place American cities within range for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Some Americans thought that if war with the Soviets was inevitable it was better to have it before trans Atlantic missiles were developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The US government\u2019s special relationship with Britain was special, but not as special as with New York and the other US cities in the firing line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Because the Americans had considered having a nuclear war in Europe whilst their own cities remained relatively safe, Britain looked to Trident\u2019s predecessor, Polaris, as the guarantee of its safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It would give Britain the ability to launch first strike nuclear attacks on any country so threatening to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Whether weapons bought from America give true independence is a mute point, yet possession of the world\u2019s most advanced weapons\u2019 system at least gives Britain the status of a super power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The danger to future peace lies in EU federalists dreaming of a European super state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">If EU members, they argue, pool their military resources to create a European army they will acquire Britain\u2019s unique access to America\u2019s strategic weaponry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Yet Britain will never relinquish control of its nuclear arsenal as America would have retained safeguards to prevent herself being targeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It has the ability to turn off its satellite navigational system which has been demonstrated in recent years, particularly in the disputes with Iran over incursions into their territorial waters. Normally GPS would give each vessel its precise location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">However if America turns its satellites off, navigation is immediately returned to the days of paper charts and heaving the lead line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">They have the ability to do this anywhere in the world including the English Channel at the flick of a switch.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1794\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1991-001.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1794\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1794\" src=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1991-001.jpg\" alt=\"picture credit cartographer Gene Leisz\" width=\"570\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1991-001.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eastern-Europe-1991-001-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">picture credit cartographer Gene Leisz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Until communism fell in the early 1990\u2019s most European countries were divided between being either a part of NATO or the Warsaw Pact, although sometimes overlooked is Finland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Originally part of Tsarist Russia, it broke away during the 1917 Russian Revolution and fought on Hitler\u2019s side during WWII.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Yet it managed to escape Stalin\u2019s wrath in the aftermath and has trod a careful path between the two superpowers ever since, only joining the EU in 1995 when neighbouring Sweden did likewise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">NATO by allowing Poland and the Baltic states to join, may find it turns out to be a dangerous step as many still remember the 20 million Russians who died under the WWII Nazi jack boot, and the two million German women brutally raped in 1945.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Both sides are fearful of the perceived enemy encroaching and unbalancing the status quo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The EU federalists believing they have Britain\u2019s Trident at their disposal are inexorably leading Europe towards another war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In signing up countries that lie in what Russia regards as its patch endangers the rest of us. The closer the EU expands towards Mother Russia\u2019s sacred heartland the sooner the Russians will flex their muscles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Leave the EU<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Only by Britain leaving the EU will it be made clear to the federalists that they must exercise caution when baiting the Russian bear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The former Warsaw Pact countries should follow Finland\u2019s lead and tread a careful path of peaceful coexistence between Europe and Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">With Britain\u2019s departure the EU would have to accept the reality that it is an economic \u00a0trading zone, and not a nuclear armed super state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Britain in its turn, finally free of Brussels, would be able develop its own unique place in a modern world keeping its international military obligations separate from peaceful trading with its immediate neighbours across the Channel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By William Mills<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":10910,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[375,6],"tags":[64,1510,98,23,1509],"class_list":["post-10906","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-overseas-news","tag-britain","tag-churchill","tag-eu","tag-slider","tag-trident"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
