Thirty Five \u00a0cleaner buses are being introduced into Brighton and \u00a0will complete 130,000 greener journeys a year helping improve air quality.<\/span><\/p>\n More than 30 buses in Brighton will be fitted with green technology to cut harmful emissions by up to 90%, after successful bids for \u00a3498,750 of funding was announced today (Sunday 3 January 2016).<\/span><\/p>\n The Clean Bus Technology Fund 2015 is being awarded to 18 local authorities across England to retrofit buses with technology to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in pollution hotspots. <\/span><\/p>\n Due to their high mileage and long operational life, introducing greener buses can significantly help air quality in town and city centres. <\/span><\/p>\n The buses upgraded from this fund in Brighton will complete 130,000 journeys a year.<\/span><\/p>\n Greener buses mean a cleaner city centre for Brighton and a healthier environment for everyone. <\/span><\/p>\n The 35 upgraded buses that will soon hit the roads in Brighton continue our commitment to better air quality by investing in greener transport. <\/span><\/p>\n By targeting pollution hotspots and backing the low-emission technology of the future, we are making the right long-term decisions to improve people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n To win awards, local authorities had to show evidence that the technology would reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by at least 50%. <\/span><\/p>\n The buses will be fitted with exhaust gas treatment systems called selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and will be back on the roads after their upgrade. <\/span><\/p>\n As part of the award, councils must continue to monitor the schemes and provide evidence of their effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n This new fund, worth around \u00a37million, adds to the \u00a320 million invested by the government in retrofit schemes and is in addition to significant match funding by local authorities and support from bus operators to improve air quality since 2011. <\/span><\/p>\n This has ensured over 2,000 buses have already been upgraded across England to cut emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n The Clean Bus Technology Fund is a core part of the government\u2019s commitment to green transport which has seen \u00a32 billion worth of measures introduced since 2011. <\/span><\/p>\n Upgrading existing transport sits alongside the government\u2019s \u00a3600 million investment in low-emission technology over the next five years, with the aim of making almost every car and van zero emission by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By William Mills<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":10784,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[104],"tags":[70,1501],"class_list":["post-10780","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news-brighton","tag-brighton","tag-buses"],"yoast_head":"\nTransport Minister Andrew Jones said:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
