Richmond will support the operational commander in the next phase which aims to conduct operations to board and seize vessels in the southern Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The ship will bring added surveillance and reconnaissance \u2013 including her Scan Eagle unmanned aerial system which can cover vast areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The vital work of HMS Bulwark, HMS Enterprise and our Merlin helicopters shows the UK\u2019s commitment to tackling the refugee crisis at source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Royal Navy has rescued thousands of people from peril but we\u2019ve been clear we have to tackle the gangs behind this, which is why it\u2019s important the mission moves to the next phase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">We will not stand by and let this smuggling trade escalate; we will confront this criminal activity which risks the lives of innocent people every day.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">HMS Bulwark Royal Navy Merlin helicopters<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">HMS Bulwark and Royal Navy Merlin helicopters played a key part in the rescue mission earlier this summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Thousands of people were rescued from small boats operated by the gangs between North Africa and Europe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The EU mission is part of a wider comprehensive approach to tackling the migration crisis at the source countries in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">HMS Richmond, which has been on operations east of Suez, will be offered at an EU force generation conference today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">While it would not be her primary role HMS Richmond would be able to support Search and Rescue operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/MOD-HMS-Richmond.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10216\" src=\"https:\/\/coopsy.co.uk\/thenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/MOD-HMS-Richmond-570x380.jpg\" alt=\"image of HMS Richmond\" width=\"570\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/MOD-HMS-Richmond-570x380.jpg 570w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/MOD-HMS-Richmond-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the-news.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/MOD-HMS-Richmond.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOD media<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":10215,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[1459,1458,923],"class_list":["post-10214","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-overseas-news","tag-eu-borders","tag-migrant-crisis","tag-royal-navy"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
