Simon Kirby, Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, who has been calling for Abu Qatada’s deportation for years, has
welcomed the news of the hate preacher’s extradition to Jordan.
As a result of the Government’s, and in particular the Home Secretary, Rt. Hon. Teresa May’s MP efforts, Abu Qatada is now facing trial over terror charges in Jordan. A new treaty was signed between the UK and Jordan which cleared the previous hurdles to his extradition.
Simon commented that “the removal of Abu Qatada shows that the Government is committed to ensuring that ‘hate preachers’ and those who advocate violence cannot find safe haven in the UK.
This case also clearly shows the limitations of the European Convention on Human Rights and the need for urgent reform across the EU. It simply cannot be right that the Government has to work so hard to remove individuals like Abu Qatada. For far too long he enjoyed all the benefits of living here in the UK while peddling his hate.”
