The public are being invited to enter a competition for this year’s theme in UK Disability History Month 2014 (22 November – 22 December).

With the centenary of World War 1 being commemorated worldwide, activities during the month will explore the disabling effects of conflicts and how society has responded through to the present day. This year the theme is “War and impairment: the social consequences of disablement”.

Suchitra Chatterjee, Anti-Social Behaviour and Hate Crime Coordinator at Sussex Police, said:

This year’s theme is inspired by WW1 but it is a very current issue, particularly as advanced medical treatment has meant that more injured service people now survive wars but many are left with life-changing injuries, both physical and mental. We’re inviting members of the public to come up with their response to this year’s theme, and winning entries will be displayed in an exhibition during the month itself with prizes given for the top entries.”

This competition forms part of a programme of events delivered by Sussex Police in conjunction with partners to celebrate Disability History Month and promote equality for people with disabilities in our communities and workforce.

How to enter

If you’re a Sussex resident and interested in entering, you’re asked to draw or paint an image (up to A3 size only) or write a poem or piece of prose in response to this year’s theme: “War and impairment: the social consequences of disablement”.

Entries should be scanned and sent to via email to Info.Diversity@sussex.pnn.police.uk or post or in person to Brighton Police Station, John Street, Brighton, BN2 OLA for the attention of Suchi Chatterjee. The deadline for entries is 31 October 2014. An exhibition of the artwork will launch on 4 November 2014.
