Police boarded a yacht at Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne, at midnight on Thursday (9 June) found it was carrying herbal cannabis, with an estimated street value of £280,000.
Anthony Keiran Poyser, 28, and Harrison Law, 21, both of no fixed address, are each charged with being jointly concerned in the improper importation of cannabis to the United Kingdom.
CI Emma Brice, Eastbourne district commander, said:
I am aware of the concern about the security of smaller ports and harbours around Britain’s coastline. I would like to reassure people that police are alert to the situation and will respond whenever circumstances demand.
Editorial note:
Eastbourne Marina Drug Bust:
Yachts entering both Eastbourne and Shoreham harbours have to go through locks which makes them subject to greater scrutiny leaving Brighton as the smugglers port of choice.
Brighton Marina can be approached directly from out to sea and once through the entrance a yacht simply has to tie up to one of the many pontoons and hop off.
On many occasions there is only one member of staff available to cater for 1,000 yachts.
Once ashore it is a short walk to the busy multi storey car park.
Brighton will be much more secure when the planners built their planned walkway across to the outer wall. then there will be many more people around and the yachtsmen will have to go through a lock where trouble makers can be spotted.
